The New American Mission Hospital groundwork ceremony, held in 1954 under the patronage of the late Sheikh Abdulla
Al-Salem Al (Kuwait's 11th ruler) and attended by the late Abdulla Saleh Al Mulla (the Kuwaiti government 2nd Sercretary),
the permanent British government delegate to Kuwait and Dr. Askdr.
The strong presence of Al Mulla Family and
its substantial contributions to the modern
renaissance of the country are immortal in
the history of Kuwait. The late Abdulla Saleh
Al Mulla never missed any historical event
that laid the groundwork for a paradigm
shift to a prosperous and modern lifestyle
which pushed the country towards a global
prestigious status.
Motivated by his love and passion towards
Kuwait, Abdulla Saleh Al Mulla business and
social commitments never stalled him from
attending those very significant occasions.
He was known for his continual support
for Kuwait's rulers while they were making
history to modernize the country in all the
areas of trade, development, health and infra
structure.
In 1954, the American mission in Kuwait
organized a ceremony to lay the groundwork
for the “New American Mission Hospital”. It
was one of the very memorable occasions in
Kuwait's modernization history which had a
great impact in developing better health care
services for its growing population. The event
was held at the same site of an old hospital
established and built by the mission in 1913
to provide a modern health services in the
country.
The ceremony was held under the patronage
of the late Sheikh Abdulla Al-Salem Al-Sabah
(Kuwait's eleventh ruler) and Abdulla Saleh
Al Mulla who played a very active role in
organizing the event. It was also attended by
the permanent British government delegate
to Kuwait.
The historical ceremony was dedicated to Dr.
Stanley Mylrea, the first doctor to work in the
American Mission Hospital built in 1913. He
was highly steadfast to serve the people of
Kuwait until his retirement in 1941. In 1952,
he died and was buried in Kuwait.
After two years of non-stop construction work
to build the new American Mission Hospital,
the opening ceremony was held in 1956
with presence of Abdulla Al-Salem in 1956,
but was missed by Abdulla Saleh Al Mulla
who passed away in June 20, 1955. His
son, Bader Abdulla Al Mulla succeeded as
the government secretary and attended the
event to follow the steps of his grandfather
and father in serving Kuwait.
The hospital kept on providing its services
until 1967, the government built bigger
and more advanced hospitals to meet the
needs of the community. The building was
transformed by the Ministry of Health to
become the Department of Dermatology, then
as the headquarters of the Forensic Medicine
of the Ministry of Interior and in 1993 it was
converted to Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, a
cultural institution incorporating the private
collection of Islamic art under the care of the
Ministry of Information. It still resides and kept
in the same place near the beach as a very
important historical building in Kuwait.
